2002 Chevrolet Malibu Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2002 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: First check the brake master cylinder reservoir for brake fluid level. If the fluid level shows above midway between maximum and minimum limit, bleed off brake fluid until it reaches the midpoint. Lift the car and take off its tire along with the wheel parts. Start by hand-tightening two wheel lug nuts that hold the rotor to the hub before getting rid of the brake caliper and brake pads from their bracket. Check the brake components at the caliper bracket for injuries or wear by removing the retainer slides. Replace every damaged item found. When corrosion or damage is seen on caliper bolts and pins you must replace them with new parts that include their bushings. Place an old Brake Pad or wooden block below the Piston onto the caliper bore gently while avoiding damage to the Piston and boot. Place the retainer slides onto the caliper bracket such that the pad with wear marker faces upward against the Piston during installation. Attach brake pads to their mount and take off 2 hand-tightened wheel lug nuts for installation of the caliper. Put back the tire and wheel unit before placing the vehicle on the ground and apply the brake pedal with shut engine from zero travel to about 2/3 of its distance then release it smoothly. Continue pressing the brake pedal for 15 seconds while repeating this action until you obtain a solid brake feel which will correctly place both brake caliper pistons and pads. Finally put brake fluid in the master cylinder until it reaches the correct mark then gently brake the pads against the rotors.
