Wear appropriate eye protection before you start drilling because metal chips can cause eye injury. Place the strut in a vise designed for horizontal use with the rod completely extended. A 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit should be used to create a hole through the end cap's center. During drilling be ready for gas or mixed gas/oil release through the strut until the drill reaches its target and keep shop towels on hand to contain escaping oil. Once drilling is complete remove the strut from the vise and position the hole downward while placing it vertically above a drain pan. To guarantee complete oil drainage in the strut apply motions to rod both in and out of tube .
