2000 GMC Jimmy Universal Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2000 GMC Jimmy?
A: Before starting you need the U-Joint Bearing Separator (J9522-3) and U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J9522-5) tools plus operating space for the propeller shaft. Place the propeller shaft on a flat rest stand without clamping its components in a vise to remain safe. Identify the transmission and rear axle links on the propeller shaft before using pliers to remove its snap rings. Strike the bearing cup gently to make the snap ring release easier. Insert the lower yoke ear into a 30 mm socket then press the bearing cup of the lower yoke out using the U-Joint Bearing Separator (J9522-3). The joinder cross helps bring out the bearing cup. When this does not work, place the U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover tool between the seal and the cup to continue pressing. Turning the shaft while pressing releases the other bearing cup which lets you take out the interconnecting pieces with the cross. When replacing the front universal joint follow the steps of cup removal in the slip yoke. Look for debris and damage in the holes where retaining rings should go and the spaces that bearing cups will fill. Proper piece install depends on these surfaces being free from dirt and rust. Prepare the grooves for universal joint parts installation. Smooth the fresh universal joint journals by fitting bearing cups then basting needle bearings with grease before inserting one bearing cup moderately into yoke. Press the cross into the yoke ear while turning the ear downward until the bearing cup rests flat against the yoke surface. To complete the process install the second bearing cup by aligning trunnions and pressing it into place while testing its freedom of movement. Push the bearing retainer into position until you can see its groove. After that put in the bearing retainer. Use the arbor press to seat both retainers by pressing down with grease application as needed and strike the yoke with a dead blow hammer when the retainer refuses to fit.
