2000 GMC C2500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2000 GMC C2500?
A: Before addressing service and repairs on the non-Rack And Pinion steering gear, lift the vehicle and take off the shield. Underneath the steering gear, put a drain pan, take off all the hoses, lift them fairly high so oil won't flow and seal the ends either by tapping or capping to protect them from dirt. Remove the connection between the intermediate shaft and the steering gear and also between the Pitman Arm and the relay rod. Pull the bolts out of the frame surrounding the steering gear, then get rid of the latter. After placing the steering gear, connect it to the frame bolts and secure them with the required torque of 135 nm (100 ft. Lbs.). Add the Pitman Arm and the intermediate shaft to the shaft. Carefully remove the caps and plugs from the steering gear and its hoses and then securely put the hoses on the steering gear, tightening them to 28 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). After that, secure the shield, open the bleeder valve and move the vehicle to the ground level.
