2000 Chevrolet Tracker Timing Chain Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain tensioner on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: Disconnect the negative Battery Cable and withdraw the Timing Chain housing to replace the Camshaft Timing Chain tensioner. Pull out the spark plugs for easy rotation of the Crankshaft in aligning the marks of the timing to be aligned correctly before the disassembly. Do not turn the camshafts or Crankshaft following the removal of the Timing Chain tensioner to prevent valve and piston damage. Turn the Crankshaft for the number 1 cylinder to be at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke, keyway on the Crankshaft coincides with the mark on the block, idler sprocket arrow is pointing up, and guide pins on Camshaft sprocket coinciding with notches on the Cylinder Head. Unwind the tension on the Camshaft Timing Chain by rotating the intake Camshaft a little counterclockwise, then loosen the Camshaft timing chart tensioner and nub as well as 2 bolts (1,2) and remove the Camshaft timing chart tensioner and the gasket. Inspect the Camshaft Timing Chain tensioner for wear and damage and replace it when necessary as well as inspect the Timing Chain tensioner gasket for replacement. Push the plunger of the Camshaft tensioner into the body and add a retainer, install the gasket as well as the Camshaft Timing Chain tensioner and tighten the bolts to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) and the nut up to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Remove the retainer of the tensioner and rotate the Crankshaft for 2 revolutions to align the keyway of the Crankshaft with the timing mark of the engine block , and make sure of the alignment of the guide pins of the camshafts with the notches of the Cylinder Head. Put engine oil on the timing chains, tensioner, guides, and sprockets, and after that install the spark plugs, while tightening to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, install the Timing Chain housing and reconnect the negative cable back to the battery.
