2000 Chevrolet Tracker Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The Power Steering Pump service starts with applying wheel bearing lubricant (GM P/N 1051344) to the oil seal lip while using dexron (R)-iii automatic transmission fluid (GM P/N 12346143) on the shaft sliding surface. First install the pulley shaft through the oil seal opening of the pump body while applying dexron (R)-iii to both o-rings (1,2) before installing them to the body. Position the side plate on the pump body so that both dowel pins match the bolt holes properly. Install the rotor by first applying dexron(R)-iii to its sliding surface followed by placement of the dot facing upward then putting it on the shaft. Use new snap rings to lock the shaft into position. After applying dexron (R)-iii onto the sliding surface of the cam ring install it with the tapered end against the side plate. Apply dexron (R)-iii to each vane before installing 10 vanes to the rotor and then add the snap ring to the pump shaft. The pump body should receive dexron (R)-iii which will be used for o-ring installation. The dexron (R)-iii lubricant must be applied to both the rotor sliding surface and the pump cover before installing the pair. Then place the dowel pins (3,4) through the cover plate holes and fit the pump cover to the pump body. Proceed by slowly tightening all 4 pump cover bolts (1,2,3,4) to 23 nm (17.0 ft. Lbs.). The pump body receives the pressure switch o-ring which requires application of dexron (R)-iii followed by installation and torquing to 28 nm (20.0 ft. Lbs.). Install the relief valve to the pump body after lubricating it with dexron (R)-iii. Then add the flow control spring onto the valve. Tighten the plug to 60 nm after installing the o-rings which received dexron (R)-iii lubrication. Finish the installation with the application of dexron (R)-iii to the suction connector o-ring followed by o-ring installation. Then connect the power steering gear outlet hose connector to the pump body while torquing its connector bolts to 10 nm (88.5 inch lbs.).
