2000 Chevrolet Prizm Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front shock absorber on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: Start by eliminating the rear lower seat cushion along with the rear seat back cushion, then elevate the vehicle above floor level supported by jack stands beneath the rear suspension support. Support the weight on jack stands by slightly lower the vehicle rather than placing strain on suspension arms before removing tire and wheel assembly. First disconnect the abs speed sensor wire harness clamp from the strut assembly before removing the flexible hose and brake hose clip from the brake hose bracket and finally removing the brake hose. Attach the brake pipe to the brake hose so the master cylinder reservoir won't run dry. Start by removing one nut from the stabilizer shaft joint (when installed) along with the nut on the strut assembly. Loosen the two bolts securing the knuckle to the strut assembly and both knuckle's nuts from the rear suspension. Drop the jack stands and vehicle position just enough to reach the strut assembly top and rear suspension knuckle. Next remove the strut assembly support cap with its three corresponding mounting nuts. Lower the rear suspension knuckle and remove the two strut assembly mounting bolts and two nuts in order to remove the strut assembly. You should elevate the vehicle for strut assembly and rear suspension knuckle access before applying the two mounting bolts and two nuts but leave them slightly loose. Hook up the strut assembly to both the strut support and rear suspension knuckle utilizing three mounting nuts set to 39 nm (29 ft. Lbs.) then use two mounting bolts and nuts set to 142 nm (105 ft. Lbs.). Lift the vehicle to expose the stabilizer shaft joint before securing it to the strut assembly using one nut tightened to 44 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). When equipped with this option the wheel speed sensor wire harness needs connecting to the strut followed by uninstalling the brake pipe from the brake hose and using the clip to attach the brake hose to its bracket. After broiling the tire and wheel install the brake pipe onto the brake hose and put back the tire and wheel before taking out the jack supports until the vehicle reaches the ground. Bleed the brake system then check rear wheel alignment after reinstalling the rear seat back cushion and rear lower seat cushion.
