2000 Chevrolet Prizm Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The first step to service or repair an Alternator starts by removing the generator from its vehicle position. Make identification marks on both front and rear housing parts for correct reassembly alignment. Start by removing the terminal insulator and nut followed by the end cover plate terminal and three nuts then one bolt. After removing the end cover and brush holder cover there are five screws to remove while keeping notes about the brush holder's proper orientation during restorage. Begin by uninstalling the brush holder followed by the Voltage Regulator and seal and four screws and then separate the rectifier holder and four rubber insulators. Use either generator pulley remover/installer (J 35452) or tool (J 39194-B) equipped with a 10 mm socket and hold the rotor shaft with a 7/8 in box end wrench to loosen the pulley nut. Start by removing the pulley before disconnecting the four nuts and clip from the rectifier end frame and utilizing the bearing remover (J 28509-A) to separate the rectifier end frame. Check the drive end frame's front bearing for rough operation and wear or damage before you decide to replace it if needed. Apply an appropriate adapter to remove the front bearing after releasing four screws and bearing retainer components. The replacement of the rear bearing requires careful attention to the rotor fan to avoid any damage during bearing extraction. The universal puller (J 22888) enables workers to remove the rear bearing from the rotor before tackling the rear bearing inner cover. The installation process requires digital multimeter (J 39200), vernier caliper (J 26900-5), puller adapter (J 38276), and bearing installer (J 35419) when needed.
